How to unscramble letters

Type the letters you have, in any order. Up to 18 letters work.
Add a ? for each blank tile or unknown letter. You can use up to three.
Read the results: the longest words come first, and each length has its own group.
Open Filters to keep only words that start or end with certain letters, contain a letter group, or have a set length.
Tap any word to see its meaning and both point values.

What the numbers mean

Each word shows two numbers. The first is its Scrabble score, the second its Words With Friends score. Both are the plain sum of the letter values, before any bonus squares on the board. Letters filled in by a blank tile count as zero, and they are underlined so you can see which ones they are.

The two games value letters differently. A J is worth 8 in Scrabble but 10 in Words With Friends, and an H is worth 4 in Scrabble but 3 in Words With Friends. That is why the same word can rank higher in one game than the other. Sort by either game's points to see your best play.

Tips for getting more words

Look for common endings. If you hold an S, ED, ING or ER, many longer words open up. Try your letters with and without them.
Use the blank wisely. Add one ? to see how many extra words a blank tile gives you. The tool shows the count under the results.
Check vowels. A rack with only one vowel makes few long words. Short, high-value words with letters like Z, X or Q are often the better move.
Try the anagram view. When you need a word that uses every letter, as in Jumble or a crossword clue, the anagram solver lists only those words first.

Which words are included

TileFinch uses ENABLE, an open word list of about 173,000 English words that is free for anyone to use. After removing a short list of slurs and adding a few common game words such as QI and ZA, our list has 172,523 words. Every page on the site uses the same list and the same search code, so the counts you see here match the counts on our word-list pages.

ENABLE is close to, but not the same as, the official tournament dictionaries for Scrabble. Words With Friends built its own word list starting from ENABLE, so results line up well with that game. You can read more on how our word list works.

Questions people ask

How many words can I make from RETAINS?

Our list has 256 words that can be built from the letters in RETAINS. Words that use all seven letters: ANESTRI, ANTSIER, NASTIER, RATINES, RETAINS, RETINAS, RETSINA, STAINER, STEARIN.

Can I enter a blank tile?

Yes. Type a question mark for each blank, up to three. Letters the blank stands for are underlined in the results and score zero points.

Why does another site show a different number of words?

Word finders use different word lists. Some include proper nouns, abbreviations or words from several dictionaries at once. We use one clearly named list, ENABLE, and say so on every page.

Is a word missing?

ENABLE dates from around 2000, so some newer words are not in it. Tell us which word and which game you play, and we will review it.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The search runs in your browser, so results appear as you type, even on a slow connection once the word list has loaded.
